Usually with my Kill Pretty layouts I try and over welm and oversaturate every page. I knew that ATOMS was also a graphic desginer and he'd want something more sleek and minimulist. So, while still filling the page Kill Pretty style, I dialed it back to make sure ATOMS was happy with his spread.

I interviewed Mike Carroll with his old friend who happened to also be a famous skate photographer. He had all these old photos of Mike when he was really young. Because the interview had a lot of old stories from Mikes past I decided to only use photos of Mike from 16-18. Everyone loved the old 90's photos.

JJ Villard's style is constant stimulation in every frame of his cartoon King Star King so he was perfect for Kill Pretty. I wanted his layout to reflect that by putting every ounce of attractive imagry I could pull from the cartoon and put it in the layout. I wanted it to be controlled chaos.

I knew Everett's cartoons would pop on their own so white was the perfect background. Everett sent me the original drawings he first did for his show Duckman. I was able to scan them and drop them into the background to give it a little extra flair.

I always want my covers to be simple, excting and attention grabbing. I felt like a screaming face fit perfectly. I like choosing a logo color that appears in the image if possible. The purple felt like it added to the image without taking it over.

The features listed at the bottom are black because I want the infromation to be feature but not take away from the face. The words are there if you want them. If not just look into those eyes.

This article was a skaters hypothisis that if he skated backwards he could travel backwards in time. I used blue prints, space and science graphics to give it the deeper comedic feeling.

JJ Villard was featured in this issue and I knew I wanted his art for the cover. I spent hours watching his cartoon looking for something that would slap the reader in the face. An image that forced you to pick the magazine up and see what the heck could be inside.

Those black teeth and blue eyes just did it for me. It's screaming, it's moving, it's Kill Pretty.

MERS is famous for incredble outlines and sketches. When I went to his house to interview him he showed me thousands and thousands of sketches. I took that idea and collected images of drafting tools, blue prints and his orginal sketches. I wanted to show off as many images of his art as possible while still keeping it balanced. I felt like I was able to keep it all together nicely.

I had way too much fun with this one. I spent hours pouring over old horror movie magazines and watching horror movies taking screen grabs and images anywhere I could. I wanted each "horrorscope" to have it's own little icon so everyone could feel special when they read how they'd die.

Crimebo is a clown who does true crime tours around LA. I knew we wanted to get images of him in actual historic buildings in LA. I also wanted the layout to have a cartoonish feel because his make up is so cartoonish.

I also directed the photo shoot.

Indecline is a group of deliquent/activist/graffiti writers so I knew the layout had to look dirty. They document everything and are constantly releasing new videos so I ordered an old VHS camcorder on Ebay. When I got it I smashed it with a hammer and took some photos of the carnage after. Fit the theme perfectly

Love in a fastfood resturant? I wanted the layout to resemble the In n' Out menu with my own little twists like, "No Love Burger".

I also directed the photo shoot.

UFO is a graffiti writer from New York that uses every possible means of doing graffiti. I wanted the layout to refeclt the messy, crazy life of UFO flying around New York.

I was much more concerned with the imagry of Wastedland (a short film) than the review. I wanted to give the words space but I also wanted to show off how beautiful the film is.

PASER's art is very pointy and sharp. I took some of his photos, took the color out and had them coming into the page like they were cutting into the article.

The photo was taken by a close friend and great photograher and I beged him to let me use it. The fight had an energy that was only completmented by the red logo. Still my favorite cover I've ever done.

KINE wanted something that looked like a science textbook. I looked at different textbooks and copied the font and style. We added some images of cyrstals and rocks to go with it.
